What is a National Historic Landmark? National Historic Landmarks are designated by the Secretary of Interior because they possess exceptional national significant value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. Approximately 2,500 sites have been designated National Historic Landmarks, including 36 in Michigan. They are to be distinguished from about 80,000 sites, buildings or locations that have been listed on the Department of Interior’s Registry of Historic Places. National Historic Landmarks are the crème de la crème of this country’s historic sites.
A person could amass an excellent and comprehensive knowledge of the history of the United States by reading a half-dozen or dozen pages about each of these National Historic Landmarks.
